Akio Suzuki (J) – self-made instruments

Xavier Quérel (F) –16mm projector
David Chiesa (F) – double bass
Jean-Philippe Gross (F) – electro-acoustic devices

MOTOR HUM and TAPE HISS, and if drive belts are loose: QUIETSCH! If they stop: CLICK – Walkman recordings do have their inherent characteristics. Onda cultivates all of them, including their typical distortions. All the time taking special care that the far-traveled sound world beyond the recorder is not lost. Onda’s music pieces combine fragments of the audio diary he started in 1988 in such a way that the phenomena of memories pile up in layers. Only natural then that the obsessive cassette-jockey memorizes the tics of his machine companions as well. CUT //

With a 16mm film projector WHIR and STUTTER are standard. However, intentionally overlong transport pauses confront the machine with peril in the most psychedelically beautiful manner: hot bulb, BUBBLE, MELT, a hole in the film. Querel is absorbed in live action in the projection beam, Chiesa is also courageously palpable at the bow and string bass. Wildly, but well rehearsed, the trio is completed by the feedback and sizzling of analogue modular synthesizer and the rattling of a cymbal delicately balanced on top of a loudspeaker (Gross). Suzuki has an intense performing presence when he transforms sticks, stones and simple self-made instruments into an amazing zero-current-noise. He drums captivatingly, he rubs metal springs; his glass tube playing pays homage to the great titmouse. He modulates sounds with water or follows their traces into the space. His reputation is legendary, not least due to his spiral-wire Analapos, with which he transforms vocal and percussive impulses into unreal sounding echo effects.
